# The chart of accounts and your records

Accounting brings together the nomenclature of your accounts and the records that feed it: the chart of accounts and its import, the statements your bank sends you, the cash receipts you scan, and the history of everything done to those records.

## What the accounting section is for

A clear account nomenclature, aligned with your accountant's, and the records that feed it.

* Describe your accounts by number and label, in your own nomenclature.
* Link a bank account in the chart to a real treasury account.
* Bring over a full chart in minutes with the Excel / CSV import, and import your statements and receipts without re-keying.

## An account = a number and a label

Each line of the chart of accounts is an account, identified by its number and described by a label. You can add a description, set a currency and, for bank accounts, point to one of your treasury accounts. The number is kept exactly as you type it, leading zeros included.

Note

The chart of accounts belongs to your organization. It is neither imposed nor shared: you reproduce your accountant's nomenclature exactly.

## Anatomy of an account

A chart account brings together a few simple fields.

* Number  
The account identifier, entered as text to preserve leading zeros. Unique within your chart.
* Label  
The account's name, with an optional description.
* Currency  
An optional currency (3-letter ISO code) when the account is held in a specific currency.
* Bank account  
For a bank account, an optional link to one of your treasury accounts.

## Build your chart

Two paths, depending on volume.

1. One-by-one entry  
Open Accounting, then Chart of accounts, and add your accounts one at a time.
2. Bulk import  
For a full chart, import an Excel or CSV file all at once.
3. Link your bank accounts  
Attach the chart's bank accounts to your treasury accounts to keep everything consistent.
